What is the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)?

If you have been around since 2013, chances are you have been bombarded with IoT so much that you feel you are now an expert on the topic. But are you? Let let us face it, do you really know what is the Internet of Things (IoT)?  How does it work? And why is it so important? It is okay, most of us do not. And if you do not either, read on and we promise we will not tell anyone.

What is the Internet of Things (IoT)?

We are now in the center of a new revolution, the digital transformation revolution. And its driver? Drum roll please… You guessed it, The internet of Things!. The Internet of Things (IoT) is changing how businesses, and people, operate by automating and eliminating processes. Why? Well because In primitive terms the Internet of Things (IoT) is take thing, connect internet, get data.

In a more sophisticated sense, it is the notion of connecting any device to the internet or other connected devices forming an enormous network of connected people and devices that collect and share data on how the device is used and its surrounding environment. Although the Internet of Things (IoT) covers anything and everything connected to the internet, is being used more and more to refer to devices which talk to each other. Think of sensors, smartphones and wearables. Through joining these devices within a network, we can gather and analyze data to perform an action. This can be used to learn from a process or support in a process, whether tracking a football player development or automatically adjusting light exposure in a greenhouse without the intervention of a human.

How Does the Internet of Things (IoT) Work?

Knowing what is IoT helps us understand how Internet of Things (IoT) works, to sum it up; devices, networks and lots and lots of data. But let us go a little more in depth. Devices, or any object technically, are equipped with sensors and then connected within a network to an IoT platform. And so, this platform goes on to integrating data from all the different devices and uses its built-in analytics, which are designed to address specific requirements, to display the most relevant and valuable information. This information is used to detect any patterns, anomalies, avoid issues before they occur and take smart decisions.
Why is the Internet of Things (IoT) Important?

We get it, the internet of things connects any thing to the internet and displays data, but why does it matter? You got a glimpse of why IoT is important, it helps business and people take smart decisions, but if good decisions are not enough reasons for you, the next lines are written for you, they will tell you why Internet of Things (IoT) is so important. Time is our most precious commodity, money is up there too, and the Internet of Things allows us to be more efficient in how we do processes, saving us both time and money. Often while cutting waste and reducing emissions as well. This is always a good idea for the environment. Listen, we are not saying Internet of Things (IoT is the savior, the solution to end world hunger and poverty, but we are saying it is one of the most important technological developments in the 21st century. Connecting every day things like cars and baby monitors to the internet offers easy communication between devices allowing people to have total control over their lives and live and work smarter. It is the easier route if Yoga and meditation are just not for you. IoT is also vital for businesses if they want to survive, it offers the private and public sectors opportunities to rethink how they produce and deliver services and goods by enabling organizations to automate their processes. This lowers labor costs, optimizes logistics and creates transparency with customers.
